Pricing power as self-fulfilling prophecy in U.S. gasoline
Empirically investigating inflation expectations and retailer scarcity, and how the two interact to shape prices and price pass-through asymmetry. This was my undergraduate thesis.
Alexander Smith
I am an MSc student in Advanced Economics and Finance at Copenhagen Business School. The MSc blends advanced study in industrial organization, macroeconomics and finance with training in advanced quantitative methods.
I also have a BSc in International Business and Politics from Copenhagen Business School. The BSc chiefly concerned political economy, economics, political philosophy and science, corporate finance, and organization and strategy. I elected to further study advanced statistics, machine learning, investment finance, and sustainable finance.
Academic profile
My chief interests are market power and macroprudence:
- how various socioeconomic-network frictions shape prices, investment, and assetholding, and
- how assetizing market power shapes policy transmission, macrofinancial stability, and structural transitions.
I primarily work quantitatively. I most often use Python, R, and Stata for empirical analysis. I have further experience with machine learning, and with qualitative and comparative historical methods.

Beyond economics, I am interested in complex systems, cognition both biological and artificial, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, and these topics' overlap. I was briefly part of the Centre for Philosophy of AI at the University of Copenhagen.
My favourite colour is International Klein Blue. I play average games of chess and go.
